3 dead and 3 wounded in a shooting in Paris: the Public Prosecutor
Three people were tragically killed and three others seriously injured in a shooting in the heart of Paris on Friday, according to police and prosecutors.
The suspect, a man in his 60s, has been arrested and taken into custody.
The gunman’s motives were not clear, as two of the four wounded were in serious condition on Dingyin Street in the modern 10th district.
“The shooter was arrested with his weapon. The danger is over,” a police source told AFP (AFP). His motives remain unknown at this point.
The shots, fired shortly before midday (11am GMT), caused panic in the neighbourhood, an area teeming with shops, restaurants and bars.
Citizen Emmanuel Bugenan told AFP that the man was arrested in a hairdressing salon.
He explained, “There were people panicking, shouting at the police and pointing to the salon, ‘He’s there, he’s there, get in.'”
He said he saw two people on the salon floor with leg injuries.
A shopkeeper in the area, who asked not to be identified, told AFP she heard seven or eight shots, saying “It was complete panic. We locked ourselves inside.”
The Paris prosecutor’s office said an investigation had been opened and “a man between the ages of 60 and 70 has been arrested and is in custody”.
“His identity is in the process of being verified,” she added.
News of the shooting sent nerves in a city that has been repeatedly targeted by terrorist groups since 2015.
Paris is also the scene of occasional outbreaks of gang violence.
