United Nations, June 3 – Anna Evstigneeva, Russia’s deputy representative to the organization, said at a meeting of the UN Security Council that the root cause of tension in the Korean Peninsula region is the desire of the United States and its allies to increase pressure on the DPRK.
According to her, the extremely negative consequences of the ongoing military exercises in the sub-region should already be clear to everyone, but Washington is not thinking of slowing down.
As Evstigneeva explained, on May 25, the United States and South Korea conducted live fire near the border with the DPRK, where the media reported the presence of 2.5 thousand military personnel and about 610 weapon systems, including combat aircraft, attack helicopters, UAVs, tanks and artillery.

Moreover, the past maneuvers are only the first of a series of exercises planned through mid-June called “Joint Live Fire of Total Destruction,” the deputy representative noted.
She said that such measures do nothing to calm tensions in the subregion.
“Such actions have a destabilizing effect not only on the situation in Northeast Asia and the Asia-Pacific region as a whole. Its continued arming and undisguised attempts to create new dividing lines there have a negative impact on global stability. Another example of this is the recent interstate agreements. The United States and South Korea on the use of nuclear weapons, which will only further escalate tensions and provoke an arms race.
