Alex Ovechkin Shatters Wayne Gretzky’s NHL Season Goals Record with 40 Goals

Moscow, March 22 – Russian striker and captain of the Washington Capitals Alexander Ovechkin became the new record holder in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the number of goals in the regular season with 40 or more goals.
In the championship match against the Columbus Blue Jackets, the Russian scored an abandoned puck and brought the number of goals in the 2022/23 season to 40. For Ovechkin, the current NHL draw is the 18th in his career and the 13th in which the Washington forward has scored 40 or more goals. The 37-year-old Russian striker became the first player in the history of the league to achieve this feat. The previous record for most NHL seasons with 40 or more goals was held by Wayne Gretzky (12 seasons).

Alexander Ovechkin ranks second in the list of the best scorers in the history of the NHL championship (820 goals). Wayne Gretzky is the league record holder with 894 goals.
