Announcing the Doomsday Clock update!

According to a leading group of nuclear scientists, humanity is living through its most dangerous hour: the so-called “doomsday clock” approaches midnight in just 90 seconds.

In Bulletin of the Atomic Tuesday, atomic scientists changed the doomsday clock by 10 seconds ahead to reflect the group’s view of how close the world is to a major catastrophe.

The watch, which is updated every January, is designed to alert people to threats to their existence, including nuclear war, climate change and biotechnology.

The group said the latest revision reflects “a period of unprecedented risk” linked largely, though not exclusively, to “heightened risks of a crisis in Ukraine.”

And the SASB predicted that if the last remaining nuclear weapons treaty between Russia and the United States, New START, expires in 2026, a nuclear arms race will begin. Indeed, China is rapidly expanding its nuclear program, North Korea has stepped up its missile tests, Iran is moving closer to nuclear capability, and the US, Russia and India are upgrading their arsenals.

Former Mongolian President Tsakhia Elbegdorj said the common denominator that runs through all existential threats in the world is “failure of leadership.” Mary Robinson, the former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, agreed: “The doomsday clock is sounding the alarm for all of humanity. We are on the brink, but our leaders are not moving fast enough or on a large enough scale to ensure world peace.”

The last time the Doomsday Clock was moved forward 20 seconds, up to 100 seconds from midnight. It has remained unchanged since the group’s 2021 and 2022 reviews.
