Pasta, coffee, and soft drinks are among the favorite foods and drinks of many, but they can be the culprit behind IBS symptoms, which include bloating and stomach cramps.

While the exact cause of this condition is unknown, dietary changes can often control symptoms.

According to the nutritionist, MailOnline reveals to people the main foods and drinks that cause unpleasant bloating and how to deal with them.

Soft drinks

Soft drinks are a known cause of bloating.

Drinkers swallow excessive amounts of air due to the fact that carbon dioxide enters directly into the stomach. As the drink passes through the digestive system, it releases a lot of gas.

As a result, the stomach begins to expand and swell, an effect that can last for hours after you’ve had your drink.

Patients may experience frequent belching and flatulence as the gas passes through the body.

And while giving up soft drinks entirely may seem like the easiest option, nutritionist Nicola Ludlam-Rhyne says there are easy ways to enjoy them.

She said that if you drink it slowly and in sips, it can reduce the amount of air entering the digestive tract.

fruit

While eating lots of fruit may seem like a healthy and nutritious option, it can have negative consequences.

And this can lead to bloating, as the fruit contains sugars and fructose, which makes digestion difficult.

For example, apples contain sorbitol, a type of indigestible sugar known to cause stomach problems and severe bloating.

“Keep (fruit) a maximum of three servings per day,” Ludlam-Ren said.

She explained that it is better to distribute the portions evenly and limit the consumption of fruit juice to 150 ml.

She said that snacking on vegetables may be more beneficial for the stomach.

But Ludlam-Ryn cautioned: “Avoid too many onions and large portions of cauliflower and broccoli if they cause bloating.”

coffee

This is bad news for coffee drinkers because the hot drink can cause bloating.

Caffeine and coffee increase stomach acid production, which can lead to bloating, gas, and heartburn. It also overstimulates the intestines, causing contractions and discomfort.

And this effect isn’t just limited to coffee: tea, chocolate, and some over-the-counter pain relievers designed to relieve headaches are full of stimulants.

And a study published in the National Library of Medicine found that those who drank coffee a week or more had a higher chance of developing IBS.

Alcohol

One alcoholic drink causes bloating. Alcohol itself is an inflammatory substance, which means that it can cause bloating in the body.

It has also been shown to cause irritation of the gastrointestinal tract, which can lead to flatulence.

It can also cause weight gain due to its high calorie content and the activation of appetite stimulating chemicals.

starches

Pasta is a staple on many kitchen cabinets.

But starches and other foods like potatoes, pasta, and bananas contain resistant starches that are difficult for the body to break down.

This can lead to cramping, bloating, and gas.
