Bangladesh Government’s Commitment to Free and Fair Elections

As Bangladesh prepares for general elections in January 2024, the government has emphasized its dedication to conducting free and fair elections. Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momin recently addressed concerns raised by several Western countries regarding the election. He denied any speculations and emphasized that democracy, human rights, and justice are fundamental principles of the nation.

The government has implemented measures to ensure the fairness of the elections, such as the use of biometric voter ID cards and transparent ballot boxes. These efforts are supported by an independent election commission. Minister Momin highlighted the strength and independence of the Bangladesh Election Commission, which has the authority to take action against any interference or bias. They can even annul elections in case of fraud or voting misconduct.

The Awami League-led government, which has been in power for almost two decades, has conducted numerous elections, most of which were considered free and fair. Recently, municipal elections were held in five cities, and they were conducted peacefully. Minister Momin expressed gratitude towards the Election Commission for their excellent work.

Bangladesh’s Diplomatic Stance: Friendship for All

Regarding Bangladesh’s diplomatic stance, Minister Momin stated that the government pursues “friendship for all, hatred towards none” and dismissed speculations of rebalancing towards China. He explained that Bangladesh maintains a balanced and unbiased foreign policy due to its strategic location between China and India.

Bangladesh has announced its outlook for the Indo-Pacific region, advocating for open, free, safe, inclusive, and rules-based mobility. This aligns with the views of India and Japan. Minister Momin clarified that while Bangladesh engages with multiple countries, including China, for various projects, it also collaborates with Japan, South Korea, and India for critical infrastructure development.

He emphasized that Bangladesh’s borrowing practices are prudent, and the external debt-to-GDP ratio remains below the IMF’s threshold of concern. The government prioritizes sustainable economic growth and actively seeks diversification in partnerships, including with the United States.
