Benfica Defeats Club Brugge 5-0 to Advance to European Champions League Quarter-Finals

Portugal’s Benfica beat their Belgian guest Club Brugge 5-1 in the second leg of the Champions League final on Tuesday to reach the quarter-finals for the second straight season.

And at the Da Loch Stadium in Lisbon, Benfica resumed their 5-1 victory over the opposition after beating them 2-0 in the first leg in Belgium.

Rafa Silva scored in the 38th minute, Gonzalo Ramos (45+2 and 57), Joao Mario (71 from the penalty spot) and Brazilian substitute David Nerich (77) scored the hosts’ goals, and the only goal was scored by the Dutchman Bjorn Meyer. Brugge goal (87).

Benfica is presenting an outstanding season under German manager Roger Schmidt as they lead the national league with one loss in 23 matches and appear to be on the right track to become Portuguese champions for the first time since 2019.

Benfica have topped their group in the current edition of the Champions League, surprisingly beating Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus after two draws against the French champions and two wins against the Italian side.

The Lisbon side reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League last season at the expense of Dutch side Ajax before being knocked out by Liverpool after losing the first leg 3-1 in Lisbon and then forcing an exciting 3-3 draw, underpowered, back in Enfield.
