Benfica secures contract extension with Roger Schmidt

Moscow, April 1 – German coach Roger Schmidt extended his contract with Lisbon Benfica until 2026, according to the official Twitter of the most famous Portuguese football club.
The German took over Benfica in May last year, replacing Nelson Verissimo as head coach. Previously, Schmidt headed Dutch PSV, German Bayer, Austrian Salzburg and Chinese Beijing Guoan.
The Lisbon team leads the Portuguese championship this season with 68 points in 25 rounds. Second-placed Porto is 10 points behind.

Benfica are 37 times Portuguese champions and 29 times national cup winners. The Lisbon team also won the European Cup twice and played in the tournament final five more times, and reached the final of the UEFA Cup and Europa League three times.
