Lowering Testosterone Levels for Improved Fertility
Researchers have now discovered that the keto diet can also lower testosterone levels in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a common cause of infertility. Excess testosterone in women can hinder the growth and release of eggs from the ovaries, making it challenging to conceive.
As a result, experts suggest that doctors consider recommending the keto diet when treating patients with PCOS.
A study conducted by Karniza Khalid of the Malaysian Ministry of Health in Kuala Lumpur analyzed seven studies involving women with PCOS who followed the keto diet. The research revealed that women who followed the diet for at least 45 days experienced an average weight loss of 11% and saw improvements in hormonal balance. They also exhibited lower testosterone levels, increasing their chances of pregnancy.
How the Keto Diet Affects Fertility
The low-carb nature of the keto diet leads to lower blood sugar levels, indirectly impacting blood regulation and hormone production. The diet recommends consuming dairy products, organic whole milk, and limited amounts of fruit while avoiding added sugars and refined white carbohydrates.
