MOSCOW, June 27 – A number of US lawmakers have called on the Joe Biden administration to send cluster munitions to Ukraine to help Kiev counterattack, Foreign Policy reports.
Cluster munitions are banned by the international convention, which has been ratified by 123 countries, with the exception of the United States and Ukraine.
A bipartisan group of lawmakers has called on the Biden administration to send cluster munitions to Ukraine to help Kiev breach the Russian fortified lines that have halted the ongoing Ukrainian counteroffensive.
As noted, in a letter sent to Biden on Friday, US lawmakers called for improving standard dual-use ammunition to be sent to Ukraine.
The letter quoted the magazine as saying that “the transfer of standard dual-use ammunition to Ukraine provides an opportunity to provide the Ukrainian armed forces with a strong possibility to use them against the Russian army and mercenary forces.”

Dan Rice, former special assistant to the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Forces, Valery Zalogny, said that the use of cluster munitions would allow fewer of them to be used, because they are spent more slowly.
Earlier, the Pentagon’s deputy assistant for Russia, Ukraine and Eurasia Laura Cooper said that the United States does not supply Ukraine with advanced dual-use munitions so as not to conflict with restrictions on the supply of cluster bombs.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in March that Russia would respond if information about Ukraine’s request to the United States for cluster munitions was confirmed. Prior to that, the media reported, citing US officials, that Ukraine had expanded its request to the United States to include MK-20 airborne cluster munitions.
Russia has previously sent a memorandum to NATO countries over the supply of weapons to Ukraine. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has indicated that any shipment containing weapons to Ukraine would become a legitimate target for Russia. The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that NATO countries were “playing with fire” by supplying weapons to Ukraine. The press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Peskov, noted that the injection of weapons into Ukraine from the West does not contribute to the success of the Russian-Ukrainian negotiations and will have a negative impact. Lavrov stated that the United States and NATO are directly involved in the conflict in Ukraine, including not only the supply of weapons, but also the training of personnel in the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy and other countries.
