Causes and Impact of the Wildfires in Maui
The wildfires in Maui and the Big Island were triggered by dry and hot weather conditions, aggravated by strong winds from Typhoon Dora. Some fires have spread across an area of approximately 400 hectares, leading to the destruction of several settlements, including the popular tourist town of Lahaina. As a result, roads have been closed and public transportation is currently unavailable. Local authorities have evacuated hundreds of residents.
Federal Agencies and Military Join Efforts to Combat Wildfires
US President Joe Biden has instructed all federal agencies in Hawaii, including the military, to actively participate in the firefighting operations. The US Department of Defense had previously announced the involvement of National Guard soldiers and helicopters in assisting local authorities.
