Author’s Appearance Cancelled by Jewish Organization
Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Dr. Viet Thanh Nguyen, announced on Instagram that his scheduled appearance at an event in New York City was abruptly cancelled by a Jewish organization. The cancellation came without any explanation, and it is believed to be due to Nguyen’s pro-Palestine views. Earlier, he had signed an open letter condemning Israel’s “indiscriminate violence” in Gaza.
No Reason Given for Cancellation
Nguyen, a Vietnamese-American professor and writer, was set to speak at the 92nd Street Y Literary Center in Manhattan. However, he received news of the cancellation at 3pm on the day of the event. The 92NY, which identifies itself as a “proud Jewish organization” on its website, did not provide a reason for the cancellation or offer a rescheduled date. Nguyen expressed surprise at the cancellation and dismissed rumors of a bomb threat.
Lack of Response from 92NY and Nguyen’s Representatives
Despite requests for comment, 92NY spokespeople did not respond to emails from Reuters. Similarly, Nguyen’s representatives did not provide any further details about the cancellation.

Israel’s Attacks on Gaza
Israel initiated brutal attacks on Gaza after a surprise attack by Hamas on October 7. As a result, Israel enforced a “total blockade” on Gaza, leading to severe shortages of food, water, medicine, and fuel for the Strip’s 2.3 million residents.
Open Letter and Support for Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions Movement
In a previous Instagram post, Nguyen explained that he signed an open letter with other authors to highlight the devastating impact of Israel’s policies, which resulted in the death of innocent civilians. He emphasized his continued support for the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement, advocating for economic pressure on Israel to end its occupation of Palestinian territories.
Event Converted to Independent Bookstore
Nguyen revealed that the organizers of the cancelled event transformed it into an independent bookstore. Despite the setback, he expressed his commitment to using writing as a means to fight and grieve, emphasizing the importance of art during times of war and division.
