Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry expressed his country’s willingness to work with the international community to host a global grain supply and storage center, thereby helping to overcome the global food crisis.

This is stated in the recorded speech of Shukri delivered on Friday during the ministerial meeting of the Voice of the South conference under the Indian G20 Presidency.

Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed Abu Zayed said that Shukri’s speech is part of an invitation sent to Egypt from India to take part as a guest in the G20 meetings.

Shukri reaffirmed Egypt’s support for the goals of the G20 Agricultural Working Group to formulate a roadmap for food security and climate-smart agriculture, the spokesman said.

Shukri pointed to the importance of the G20 in giving the necessary impetus to the reform of the international economic system in order to respond effectively and in a timely manner to the challenges facing the countries of the South, expressing Egypt’s commitment to participating constructively in the discussions and initiatives that are put forward within the G20 to reach consensus for difficult challenges.

World leaders and international organizations have expressed concern about an imminent and large-scale food crisis since the beginning of the Ukrainian crisis, pointing to disruptions in supply chains and impediments to crop production, knowing that Russia and Ukraine account for roughly 30% of global wheat exports, 20% of corn and 76% sunflower.
