European Commissioner for Agriculture Janusz Wojciechowski said that the European Union is not considering imposing restrictions on the import of agricultural products from Ukraine because of the problems faced by neighboring countries.

The Commissioner indicated during a press conference on Monday that Ukraine has increased agricultural exports to the European Union in 2022, which has caused problems in the agricultural sector of some countries, especially Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia.

Wojciechowski added that this is “the success of the Guarantee Corridor initiative” on the one hand, and a problem for European farmers on the other hand, as they are now experiencing difficulties in selling their products.

The commissioner confirmed that at the meeting of EU agriculture ministers this issue was discussed on Monday, but “there were no initiatives to stop or reduce imports or set up barriers for Ukrainian exports.”

He added that “it is necessary to support farmers in light of this situation” and that one option is to create a reserve in case of a crisis.

He noted that this topic was discussed, and although there was no unanimity, most states did not object to this proposal.
