First Hippopotamus Arrives in Crimea

The Bakhchisarai Mini Park in Crimea has welcomed its first hippopotamus, named Muryachka Sonya, according to zoo director Viktor Chilenko. The 17-year-old female hippo has a calm and friendly character. Chilenko expressed hope to find a suitable companion for her in the future.

New Home for Sonya

A barn spanning over 400 square meters was specifically constructed to accommodate the hippo.

Hippopotamuses in Russian Zoos

Chilenko confirmed that there are approximately five hippopotamuses in Russian zoos.

Rare Animal in the Region

Chilenko emphasized the significance of providing special enclosures for hippos, including spacious areas, swimming pools, and a nutritious diet. He remarked that having their own hippopotamus is a rarity in the Bakhchisarai region.

A World Record for Sonia the Sailor

The zoo director proudly announced that “Sonia the Sailor” became the world’s first hippo to cross the Kerch Strait on a ferry.
