Moscow, February 5 – Abrams combat tanks, which the United States promised to transfer to Ukraine, require significant logistical support, the Financial Times reported, citing experts.
Earlier, the United States promised the Ukrainian army a battalion – 31 units – of M1A2 Abrams main battle tanks, which have not yet been manufactured. At the end of January, the German government announced that it had decided to transfer German Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, and Germany intends to form two tank battalions. In the first phase, they plan to supply a company of 14 Leopard 2 type A6 from the Bundeswehr stocks.
For decades, U.S. Army armored units have lamented the long logistical tail needed to maintain Abrams combat capability in war zones. It is noted that Ukraine needs a “well-functioning” weapon. According to military expert John Nagel, the American way of war required “all the logistics in the world.”

According to the publication, learning to use the Abrams will take longer than similar training on the Leopard due to the complexity of the gas turbine engine. Abrams also needs more parts that come from the United States. Moreover, American tanks run on jet fuel, which is very difficult to obtain.
Russia sent a note to NATO countries over the supply of weapons to Ukraine. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has indicated that any shipment containing weapons to Ukraine would become a legitimate target for Russia. The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that NATO countries were “playing with fire” by supplying arms to Ukraine. The press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Peskov, noted that the injection of weapons into Ukraine from the West does not contribute to the success of the Russian-Ukrainian negotiations and will have a negative impact.
