Giant chunk of Antarctic ice breaks off

The media reported on the separation of a giant ice block from the main part of the Antarctic ice.

A publication issued by the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) states: “A giant ice block has separated from the main ice block in Antarctica. The breakaway block has an area of ​​1,550 square kilometers, and the thickness of the ice is 150 meters.

“This block, which broke off last Sunday, was formed due to the appearance of large cracks in the ice over the past few years, and this is the second largest block of ice to have broken off in this part of the continent in recent times. two years,” added the publication.

The publication noted that there is a research station of the British Antarctic Survey near the place of separation of the aforementioned block, and that local scientists said that the incident did not affect their area of ​​presence, but an ice block, which the department has a complex structure, and the consequences of avalanches there may be unexpected.

For his part, Dominic Hodgson, a glaciologist with the British Antarctic Survey, described “the separation of this mass as a natural phenomenon that has nothing to do with climate change.”
