Members of the British Parliament are due to receive a 2.9% pay rise from April after he raised the wages of public sector workers who had staged their biggest strike a few days earlier.

The increase will raise MPs’ salaries from £84,144 ($101,876.09) to £86,584 ($104,830.28).

Richard Lloyd, chairman of the Parliament’s Independent Standards Body, Ipsa, explained that the government’s “evolving approach to public sector wages” was one of the factors that led to the decision, noting that “we took a very close look at a very difficult economic environment. , as well as the government’s evolving approach to wages in the sector” in light of the expected rate of inflation, as well as the principle that MPs’ salaries should reflect their responsibility in our democracy.

He added: “Our goal is to ensure that MPs are paid fairly, regardless of their financial situation. Working as an MP should not be the prerogative of the rich.”

It is noteworthy that the salaries of public sector workers (railroad workers, nurses, ambulance personnel, civil servants and teachers) received a pay increase after they carried out the largest general strikes in the history of the country.

Following an annual public sector salary review process, nurses were given a 4% increase for 2022/23, teachers 5%, doctors and dentists 4.5%, prison officers a minimum of 4%, and military personnel 3.75% .

Police officers also received a pay raise of at least £1,900.
