The terrorist organization ISIS kidnapped dozens of people in central Syria, and the bodies of some of them were found with their throats slit on Friday.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said extremists kidnapped about 40 people on Thursday and killed at least 15 whose bodies were found on Friday in the central province of Hama. The Observatory said the dead included seven civilians and eight armed tribesmen.

The pro-government Sham FM radio said extremists attacked farmers who were collecting truffles in the eastern countryside of Hama province. She added that some of the abductees were “martyred” and that contact with the others was cut off.

Despite their defeat in Syria in March 2019, the armed group’s sleeper cells continue to launch deadly attacks in both Syria and Iraq where it once declared a “caliphate”.

Last month, ISIS militants attacked workers collecting truffles near the central city of Sukhna, killing at least 53 people, mostly workers but also some Syrian government security forces.

Truffles are a seasonal delicacy that can sell for a high price. Since truffle hunters operated in large groups in remote areas, ISIS terrorists in previous years would repeatedly prey on them, emerging from the desert to kidnap them, kill some of them and ransom them for money.
