Moscow Goalkeeper Ivan Provedel’s Goal Nominated for Best Award in Champions League
Lazio goalkeeper Ivan Provedel’s goal has been nominated for the best award in the first round of the Champions League group stage, as announced by the European Football Association (UEFA) website.
Provedel’s Heroic Goal Saves Lazio from Defeat
Ivan Provedel, an Italian goalkeeper of Russian origins, scored a crucial goal in the first leg against Atletico Madrid (1:1) that saved his team from defeat. In the fifth minute of the second half, Provedel ventured into the opponent’s penalty area during a corner kick and skillfully headed the ball into the net after a pass from the left side.
Competition for the Best Goal Award
Provedel’s goal is in contention for the award alongside goals from Joao Felix (Barcelona, Spain), Angelo Fulgini (Lens, France), and Tite (Galatasaray, Turkey).
A Historic Goal by Provedel
By scoring a goal from open play, Provedel became the second goalkeeper in the history of the Champions League to achieve this feat. The only other goalkeeper to score a field goal was Sinan Polat, the Turkish goalkeeper of the Belgian team “Standard,” who accomplished this in a group stage match against the Dutch team AZ Alkmaar in 2009. Provedel, born in Pordenone, Italy, has Russian heritage through his mother, and his grandfather had a personal connection with Lev Yashin, the only goalkeeper to have won the Ballon d’Or.
