Manchester City Begins Champions League Campaign with a Win

Manchester City started off their title defense in the Champions League with a 3-1 victory over Red Star Belgrade. The team is once again looking like strong contenders for the continental title and are aiming to secure one of the two Group 7 tickets to the final 16. Young Boys of Switzerland and Leipzig of Germany are also in the group.

A Strong Start to the Season

Prior to their Champions League match, Manchester City had a perfect start to their Premier League title defense, winning all five of their matches. Their most recent victory was against West Ham, with a score of 3-1.

The Clash with Red Star Belgrade

This was the first-ever meeting between Manchester City and Red Star Belgrade. Red Star Belgrade, the defending champions from the 1990-91 season, won the continental title by defeating French club Marseille in Yugoslavia.

Action-Packed Match

In the match against Red Star Belgrade, Manchester City had several close chances. Rodri, the top scorer in last season’s final against Inter, almost scored from the edge of the penalty area. However, the Serbian goalkeeper made a save. The crossbar also denied Erling Haaland’s header, and the goalkeeper blocked Phil Foden’s header.

VAR Drama

Just before the end of the first half, Manchester City had to make an emergency substitution due to an injury. Red Star Belgrade then shocked the home crowd by scoring a goal, initially disallowed for offside but later cleared by the video assistant referee (VAR).

A Repeat of the West Ham Game

In a similar fashion to their previous match against West Ham, Manchester City scored early in the second half. However, VAR denied Kyle Walker’s goal. Eventually, Manchester City capitalized on a mistake by the Red Star Belgrade goalkeeper. Julián Alvarez scored from a difficult angle, and Rodri sealed the victory with his third goal from the edge of the penalty area.
