Moscow, February 18 – Footballers “Newcastle United” suffered a second defeat in the current season of the England Championship, losing at home to “Liverpool” in the match of the 24th round.
The meeting, which took place on Saturday in the city of Newcastle upon Tyne at St. James’ Park, ended with a score of 2: 0 in favor of the guests. The goals were scored by Darwin Nunez (10th minute) and Cody Jacobo (17th).
Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope received a straight red card in the 22nd minute for handling the ball more than 10 meters from the penalty area. Because of this suspension, he will not be able to play in the Premier League Cup final against Manchester United at the end of February, as the suspension acquired in the national championship extends to this tournament. Magpies’ second goalkeeper Martin Dubravka was originally named to Manchester United’s League Cup, so German Loris Karius, who hasn’t played in official matches for nearly two years, is expected to take part in the final.

Newcastle had not lost the Premier League since the fifth round, and then lost to Liverpool as well. The Magpies have gone on a 17-game unbeaten streak and are fourth in the table with 41 points. Liverpool ranks eighth with 35 points.
Before the match, the players of both teams and the fans paid tribute to the memory of former Newcastle player Christian Atsu, who died under the rubble as a result of the earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria. The players gave Atsu a farewell minute of applause, while Newcastle and Liverpool fans sang the song You’ll Never Walk Alone (“You’ll Never Be Alone”) in his honour. Atsu’s widow and their children attended the match. The Ghanaian midfielder played for Newcastle United from 2017 to 2021.
