At least 16 people were injured after an explosion rocked the 5th arrondissement of Paris, starting a fire in some buildings on Wednesday.
Paris police said at least seven of the injured were in critical condition, and they urged people to avoid the area.
French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said a fire broke out on Saint-Jacques Street in the 5th arrondissement of Paris, near the Jardin du Luxembourg and the Sorbonne University.
Firefighters put out a blaze that sent smoke billowing over the domed Pantheon, police said, prompting the evacuation of buildings in the neighbourhood.
A Paris police official said that the facade of a building fell into the street as a result of the explosion, and that many firefighters and police were attending the scene.
