Poor Performance in Euro 2024 Qualifiers
Santos’ decision to step down is a direct consequence of the unsatisfactory performance of the Polish national team in the Euro 2024 qualifying matches. Despite being in a relatively easy group with the Czech Republic, Albania, Moldova, and the Faroe Islands, the team only managed to secure six points in five matches. They won against Albania (1:0) and the Faroe Islands (2:0), but suffered defeats against the Czech Republic (1:3), Moldova (2:3), and Albania (0:2). As a result, the Polish national team’s chances of reaching the Euro 2024 final have significantly decreased.
Background of Fernando Santos
Fernando Santos, a Portuguese specialist, was appointed as the head coach of the Polish national team in January of this year. Previously, he had been leading the Portuguese national team since 2014, winning the European Championship in 2016 and the European Nations League in 2019. Santos resigned from his position after the World Cup finals in Qatar, where Portugal lost to Morocco in the quarter-finals. Before his tenure with the Portuguese national team, Santos coached the Greek national team for four years (2010-2014) and worked with various clubs including Lisbon Sporting, Benfica, Porto, AEK, and Panathinaikos.
