The Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom has begun testing a nuclear fuel mixture of uranium and plutonium at the Mir research reactor.

Rosatom scientists intend to prove the efficiency and safety of using the new fuel in the third Galilean VVER reactors, which form the basis of modern Russian nuclear power and are widely used by Rosatom at Russian nuclear power plants. built by the dozens around the world.

In this regard, Alexander Ugryumov, Vice-President for Scientific Activities of the Corporation, said: “In the near future we will be able to produce new fuel depending on the requirements of the reactor and the fuel cycle strategy, and we will be able to process nuclear waste instead of storing it and significantly reduce the amount of nuclear waste.” .
