A group of American researchers found that weight loss surgery reduced the risk of dying from cancer and diabetes by 43 percent and 72 percent, respectively.

The journal Obesity points out that the researchers looked at data from 22,000 obese people between 1982 and 2018, some of whom underwent weight loss surgery. It turned out that these operations helped to reduce the risk of premature death from any cause by 16 percent compared to people who did not have such an operation. In addition, they had a lower risk of dying from cancer and diabetes-related complications.

The researchers believe this discovery sheds light on the importance and benefits of weight loss surgery. Therefore, they plan to conduct additional studies to elucidate the mechanism of this effect and, on its basis, form new methods and directions of treatment.
