Teenager Hospitalized in Volgograd Following Karakurt Spider Bite

Volgograd, July 4 – The Volgograd Region Health Committee said on Tuesday that a 13-year-old boy ended up in the intensive care unit of a Volgograd hospital after being bitten by a karakurt spider.

According to the oath, a 13-year-old boy from Volzhsky karakurt was bitten on the knee when he was helping his grandmother in the garden. First, the teenager was sent to the city hospital, and then to the acute poisoning center of the regional clinic.

“He was hospitalized in the intensive care unit. After treatment, the case with positive dynamics, of moderate severity, was transferred to the children’s department of acute poisoning, and treatment continued,” the committee said in a telegram channel.

Karakurt or steppe spider is a species of spider from the genus of black widows. Most often, spiders bite in July-August, after the bite, a person experiences a burning pain, which after 15-20 minutes spreads to other parts of the body, then chills and severe pain in the chest and limbs appear. It is noted that weakness occurs, sometimes the patient cannot even move, pressure rises, pulse quickens, nausea and vomiting appear. 8-10 hours after the bite, swelling occurs, the temperature rises. The commission said that the disease lasts from three to ten days, and death is extremely rare – if the victim does not turn to doctors.
