Also on Wednesday, the White House confirmed its intention to send 31 M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine. According to the US authorities, it will take several months for the cars to be delivered. In addition, Washington intends to send eight M88 armored rescue vehicles to Kyiv for tank service. As reported in the White House, the United States hopes that supplying Ukraine with weapons will not only help Kyiv in defense, but will also allow it to seize lost territories, including Crimea.
Russia has previously sent a memorandum to NATO countries over the supply of weapons to Ukraine. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has indicated that any shipment containing weapons to Ukraine would become a legitimate target for Russia. The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that NATO countries were “playing with fire” by supplying arms to Ukraine. Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov noted that the injection of weapons into Ukraine from the West does not contribute to the success of the Russian-Ukrainian negotiations and will have a negative impact.
An American tank battalion will not help Vladimir Zelensky capture Crimea or change the course of the Russian special operation, and Kyiv will receive a harsh response to all attacks, Leonid Slutsky, head of the Duma Committee on International Affairs, told the News Agency.
The Russian ambassador to the United States, Anatoly Antonov, said earlier that supplying Ukraine with American tanks would be a “flagrant provocation,” and warned against the destruction of the armored vehicles by the Russian army.
The Kremlin noted that the statements of the Russian ambassador to the United States about the unacceptability of arms supplies to Ukraine reflect the position of the Kremlin and the president, and the supplies themselves do not bode well from the point of view of European security and could mean raising the conflict to a qualitatively new level.
