Professor of road and transport engineering Abdullah Abu Khadra commented on the express train project for the first time in Egypt’s history as the country prepares to receive its first-ever express train next November.

Abu Khadra explained in statements to RT that Egypt is working to advance the country and make the most of Egypt’s unique logistical location as the transport ministry is working in partnership with Germany’s Siemens to build the sixth largest high-speed rail system. in the world, and this agreement would make Egypt a pioneer in rail technology. On the African continent, the high-speed electric train project works to raise the status and commercial position of Egypt at the regional and global levels, in addition to its contribution to reducing smoke and carbon emissions. emissions and environmental improvement.

The Egyptian expert indicated that the high-speed train project consists of 4 lines with a total length of 2250 km, this is the first line (Sokhna – New Alamein – Matruh) with a length of 675 km, and the second line (October 6 – Luxor – Aswan – Abu Simbel) with a length of 1100 km, and the Third line (Qena – Hurghada – Safaga) of 225 km, and the planned fourth line (Port Said – Abu Kir) of 250 km. km, and this will be in partnership with the private sector.

He continued: “Contracts have been signed for the supply of 175 electric trains, divided into 41 express trains with a speed of 250 km/h and an average distance between stations of 50 km, and 94 regional trains with a speed of 200 km/h. , and the average distance between stations is 25 km, and 40 freight tractors at a speed of 120 km/h, with a capacity of 1 million to 2.5 million passengers per day, and the capacity of transporting goods to the network upon its completion will reach 10 million tons per year .

New Suez Canal

He noted that work is now underway on the first and second lines, and the first line is planned to be put into operation at the end of 2024, since the overall implementation rate of the first express electric train line exceeded 45%, and the first stage of the train is considered the new Suez Canal that will connect the city. Ain Sukhna with the sea, Al Ahmar and the cities of Alexandria, El Alamein and Matruh on the Mediterranean Sea, and the line has 21 stations, and includes 1 main workshop, 3 repair points, the number of express trains scheduled to operate with 15 trains, regional trains 34 trains and 14 freight tractors, as well as the executive position of the second stage of the express electric train. 15%, and the number of stations is 36 stations, and it includes 1 main workshop, 2 maintenance points, 20 express trains, 48 regional trains, 20 freight tractors, and the path of the first and second lines of the network will work to achieve agricultural and urban development through cultivation one million acres and accommodating 20 million citizens on a 1,200-kilometer development path from Alexandria to Toshka.

And noted that with regard to the third and fourth lines of the express electric train, the third line, which connects the city of Kena with the cities of Hurghada and Safaga, will operate 6 express trains, 16 regional trains and 6 locomotives on the line, as it has 3 express stations and two stations for regional trains and will link the southern Egyptian city of Qena on the Nile River with the Red Sea cities of Hurghada and Safaga on the Red Sea coast. Maritime Province The train will intersect with the second line of the high-speed train at the interchange station in Ken.

Abu Khadra continued: “As for the project to build a fourth express line that will link Western Port Said and New Abu Kir, the project extends along the northeast coast from the west of Port Said, connecting with the port of Port Said at the entrance to the Suez canal and existing railway link between Port Said and Ismailia, then It extends along the international coastal road to the city of Mebeli, then the city of Damietta and its port, and passes through the new city of Mansura, and finally to the city of Abu Kir and its new port , in which services will be replaced by the Abu Kir Metro, which will reach the Egyptian station. The project passes through 6 provinces and serves 5 ports in the Mediterranean. It also serves four new urban Cities.

The Egyptian expert pointed out that the Egyptian state is preparing to hand over to Siemens the first section of the electric fast train, where the track with special characteristics is built by Egyptian hands, and Siemens will perform the electromechanical work and mobile units, as Siemens began production of mobile trains for the project at the factory companies in Krefeld, Germany in November 2022. Provided that it will be delivered and arrive in Egypt during the current year, and the remaining trains will be delivered sequentially and tested on the line until the end of 2024, and in the sectors that the Egyptian state implements, sidewalks, bridges and industrial works “rail bridges or road bridges” on the alignment for roads intersecting with the project. In addition, the removal of mountains on the way was an obstacle and it was impossible to cross them, which was a great challenge that was overcome.
