Before the prim and proper drama that went on to win an Emmy debuted for subscribers of HBO, creator Julian Fellowes was responsible for another drama series you may have heard of called “Downton Abbey.” That show is, of course, Downton Abbey, which exploded onto the scene in 2010 and immediately became a sensation all over the world. Following the extraordinary tragedy of the Titanic, people worldwide became enamored with the family life and struggles of the aristocratic Crawley clan over the course of six television seasons and two feature films. During its incredible run of five years, Downton Abbey was nominated for and won a staggering fifteen Primetime Emmy Awards. Julian Fellowes returned to television in 2022 with a brand-new series called The Gilded Age. This was nearly ten years after Downton Abbey ended its small screen run.

Who is the Creator of The Gilded Age?

Julian Alexander Kitchener-Fellowes, Baron Fellowes of West Stafford, DL, more often known by his stage name, Julian Fellowes, is a peer in the Conservative party and an actor, novelist, film director, and screenwriter in England. He is best known as the author of several novels that were bestsellers in the Sunday Times, as the writer of the screenplay for the film Gosford Park, which was awarded the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay in 2002, and as the creator, writer, and executive producer of the ITV series Downton Abbey (2010–2015), which won multiple awards. His novels have been published in the Sunday Times. According to a story from The Hollywood Reporter in April 2015, Fellowes was working on a new period drama series for NBC television, The Gilded Age. The project would occur in New York City in the late 19th century. Maggie Smith’s character, the Dowager Countess, from the drama series Downton Abbey, could perhaps make an appearance in the upcoming series in a younger incarnation, as suggested by Julian Fellowes, who stated that “Robert Crawley would be in his early teens, and Cora would be a child.” It’s possible that a younger version of Violet, the Dowager Countess, will make an appearance. The series would depict the upper echelons of New York’s high society during that time period, as the title suggests. They would take place during what is known as the Gilded Age in the United States when the United States saw an industrial boom in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

What is the Plot of The Gilded Age Season 2?

The following is a summary of the storyline for the second season of The Gilded Age:

“The Gilded Age was a time of enormous economic change, the making and losing of enormous fortunes, and fierce competition between old money and new money, on East 61st Street, where the extremely wealthy George and Bertha Russell live on the other side of the street from Marian Brook and her thoroughly old money aunts, Agnes van Rhijn and Ada Brook, this competition can be seen more clearly than anywhere else. Both monetarily and socially, the Russells are driven to climb as high as possible in the social and professional hierarchies of New York City because of their ferocious ambition. Peggy Scott, a close friend of Marian’s and someone she can confide in is making her way into the world of the Black elite in the meantime in Brooklyn. In this sparkling world on the cusp of the modern age, will the norms of society as they have been formed continue to apply, or will the game be played differently?
