MOSCOW, June 28 – Tour de France participants who test positive for COVID-19 will not be automatically disqualified from the race, according to the official website of the International Cycling Union (UCI).
Earlier in the Giro d’Italia, Belgian overall leader Remco Evenepoel was withdrawn from competition due to a positive COVID test result. For the same reason, Russia’s Alexander Vlasov, who is playing under a neutral flag, has withdrawn from the race.
The UCI statement notes that the health risks associated with the coronavirus are currently very low due to the immunity the riders have acquired. No vaccination certificates or negative COVID-19 tests will be required to compete this season. The question of continuing to participate in a race for an athlete with a positive test will be decided by a council with the participation of the team doctor, as well as representatives of the organizers and the UCI.
