US President Joe Biden on Tuesday shared his plans to hold a meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky to discuss Ukraine’s recent requests for advanced weapons to defend against Russia.

“We’ll talk,” Biden told reporters, speaking the morning after he answered an emphatic “no” when asked at the White House if he’d prefer sending F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine.

The United States is by far the largest arms supplier to Ukraine, with the Russian invasion now approaching a year away. A coalition of other Western countries is also sending weapons ranging from rifles to armored vehicles and artillery.

However, with Russia showing no sign of letting up in its crushing of neighboring Ukraine, Zelensky has launched calls for more powerful and advanced weaponry.

Recently, the United States and Germany agreed to send advanced tanks, similar to Britain earlier.

Now, Ukraine is pressing for fighter jets and long-range missiles that can strike Russian targets far from the front lines.

Poland, a key player in the Western alliance, is not currently in “formal discussions” about transferring any of its F-16s to Ukraine, Polish Deputy Defense Minister Wojciech Skorkiewicz told AFP on Tuesday.
