TikTok Testing Upload Limit for Longer Videos

TikTok is testing the ability for users to upload 15-minute videos, according to GamingIdeology. The social media giant confirmed that a limited group of users in select regions can now test this new option, which increases the video upload limit from 10 minutes to 15 minutes.

Increase in Video Length

The change was initially reported by social media consultant Matt Navarra, who shared a screenshot of the message shown to users with access to the new feature. As per the screenshot, users can now upload longer videos on both the TikTok app and desktop.

Expanding Beyond Short-form Content

TikTok, known for being a popular short-form video platform, has gradually been embracing long-form content. In February 2022, the company extended its maximum video length to 10 minutes, up from three minutes. Previously, the limit was only 60 seconds after originally expanding from 15 seconds.

Benefits for Creators

The expanded video length offers creators more time and flexibility when sharing various types of content such as recipes, beauty tutorials, educational material, and comedy sketches. Currently, if a video exceeds 10 minutes, creators redirect viewers to a “Part 2” video. With the increased time limit, creators may no longer require an entire video series to share their content.

Competition with YouTube

This move places TikTok in direct competition with YouTube. By allowing longer videos, TikTok aims to attract creators who typically post content on YouTube. Traditionally perceived as a short-form platform, TikTok’s recent expansions into longer videos have blurred the lines between the two companies. YouTube, in turn, has adopted shorter video formats with its Shorts feature.

Inching into YouTube’s Territory

TikTok is also testing a horizontal full-screen mode in select regions, further encroaching on YouTube’s territory.

Potential Resistance to Long Videos

However, not everyone may welcome the new extended video length. TikTok is primarily known for short and entertaining videos, and that is likely what most users come to the platform for. The recent addition of a fast-forward feature indicates that TikTok understands not everyone has an appetite for longer videos. It remains uncertain if and when this change will be rolled out to all users.
