Tragic Fire in Spanish Nightclub Leaves 13 Dead: Latest Updates and Investigation
Tragic Fire Claims Lives in Spanish Nightclub
On Sunday morning, a devastating fire broke out in a nightclub in the city of Murcia, located in southeastern Spain. The blaze resulted in the loss of at least 13 lives, and authorities fear that the casualty count may rise as rescue efforts continue.
The Incident
The fire started in the early hours of the morning at the two-story Teatre nightclub, also known as Fonda Milagros. Emergency services, currently working at the scene, have not ruled out the possibility of finding more victims.
Murcia Mayor Jose Ballesta described the fire as “very dangerous.” He stated that the fire began at 6am local time and emphasized the risk of collapse, making the recovery of bodies from the rubble a challenging task. Firefighters arrived at the scene at 7am and successfully extinguished the fire by 8am.
Images shared by emergency services depict fire trucks spraying water cannons onto the club’s black facade while heavy smoke billows from the roof.
Injuries and Investigation
Four individuals were injured, suffering from smoke inhalation. Two women in their twenties and two men in their forties were among those affected.
A police spokesman confirmed that a birthday party took place at the club on Saturday evening. The fire is believed to have originated on the first floor of the nightclub, which comprises two ground floors and a first floor.
Forensic experts and judicial police have been deployed to investigate the cause of the fire.
Response and Previous Incidents
Over 40 firefighters and 12 emergency vehicles responded to the scene, as Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed solidarity with the victims and their families. The city municipality declared three days of mourning and established a reception base for the victims’ relatives.
Notably, in 2017, a crowded nightclub in Tenerife, a Spanish holiday island, experienced a floor collapse that resulted in 40 injuries. Additionally, in 1990, a nightclub fire in the city of Zaragoza claimed the lives of 43 individuals.
