Trudeau Optimistic about Renewed Cooperation with Russia in the Arctic

Washington, June 27 – Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he hopes to return to cooperation with Russia in the Arctic, which is impossible as the conflict over Ukraine continues.

So he answered the question whether the Scandinavian countries would be able to respond to the problem of climate change without cooperating with the Russian Federation in the Arctic. According to Trudeau, such cooperation with Russia is impossible while the conflict over Ukraine continues.

The Arctic Council, established in 1996, is a high-level intergovernmental forum that promotes cooperation in the region, especially in the field of environmental protection. The Council includes Denmark (including Greenland and the Faroe Islands), Iceland, Canada, Norway, Russia, USA, Finland and Sweden. Presidential states rotate every two years. The presidency passed to Russia in May 2021. In March 2022, Western countries participating in the Council announced the suspension of participation in any activities of the Assembly in protest of the events in Ukraine.
