Tua Tagovailoa, the quarterback for the Dolphins, is still in concussion protocol and won’t play in the Pro Bowl Games the next week. A source told ESPN on Friday.

After being selected as the first alternate, Tagovailoa would take the place of Joe Burrow or Patrick Mahomes at the Pro Bowl. One of the quarterbacks, who participated in Sunday’s AFC Championship Game, will play in Super Bowl LVII. But after suffering a concussion in Miami’s loss to the Green Bay Packers the day before, Tagovailoa entered the protocol on December 26 and missed the team’s last three games of the regular season, including a wild-card loss to the Buffalo Bills.

The source said that Tagovailoa has chosen to spend time in the protocol because he consults with numerous medical professionals. Since the Dolphins place a high priority on his long-term health, there have been no setbacks.

This season, the third-year quarterback led the NFL in passer rating while setting career highs in passing yards and touchdowns. In the Pro Bowl fan poll, he received the most votes.

After suffering concussions in weeks four and sixteen, Tagovailoa missed the majority of six games. Two joint investigations by the NFL and NFLPA into how Tagovailoa’s head injuries were handled this season led to the first dismissal of a non-affiliated neurological consultant who had given Tagovailoa the all-clear to play after he banged his head in Week 3 and stumbled immediately after.

This collaborative investigation led the NFL to change its concussion policy.

The Dolphins’ general manager, Chris Grier, stated earlier this month that the team will start Tagovailoa at quarterback in 2023 and that the experts they had contacted did not think the quarterback’s history of concussions would make him more prone to head problems in the future.

The Dolphins have until May 1 to exercise Tagovailoa’s rookie contract’s fifth-year option.
