Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Visit Capitol and Meet with Senators
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is scheduled to visit the Capitol and hold a meeting with senators on Thursday, according to a Senate leadership aide. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell will host an all-senators meeting with Zelenskyy at 10 a.m. ET, although the location has yet to be determined. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s office has not responded to requests for comment.
Zelenskyy to Meet President Joe Biden and Attend United Nations General Assembly
President Zelenskyy is also expected to meet with President Joe Biden at the White House on Thursday, as previously reported by NBC News. Additionally, Zelenskyy has plans to attend the United Nations General Assembly in New York City during his visit to the United States, according to a senior Ukrainian official.
Continued Support for Ukraine’s Sovereignty and Democracy
During a recent visit to Kyiv, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with President Zelenskyy and other senior Ukrainian officials to demonstrate the United States’ unwavering commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and democracy. In light of Russia’s aggression, the State Department announced additional aid to Ukraine, including $100 million in foreign military financing, $90.5 million in humanitarian demining assistance, and $300 million to support law enforcement efforts in liberated regions.
Zelenskyy’s Plea for Support from U.S. Congress
Last year, President Zelenskyy addressed a joint meeting of Congress, appealing for continued support as Republicans were set to take control of the House. He emphasized that the assistance provided by the United States is an investment in global security and democracy. Zelenskyy urged U.S. lawmakers to demonstrate the United States’ presence and emphasized the potential to save millions of lives through their decisions.
