The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, praised fasting during the holy month of Ramadan, saying that following the practice showed him “the true face of Islam”.

“The sense of peace, the sense of solidarity, the sense of generosity I witnessed in refugee host communities, as well as the resilience, and the courage of the refugees themselves was very inspiring,” he said.

His remarks came during an interview with the Arabic service of UN News on Wednesday, ahead of his visit to Somalia next week as part of the secretary-general’s annual tradition of visiting a Muslim-majority country during Ramadan.

“It remains a very important source of inspiration for everything I do today as Secretary-General of the United Nations,” he added.

Asked about his annual visit to refugee camps or settlements as head of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, where he fasted in solidarity, Guterres said: “When I became Secretary-General, I thought that tradition had to be preserved – now, it’s not focused on refugee communities, it’s focused on suffering Muslim communities.

On Ramadan, Guterres said, “I think this is the moment when we all unite for peace. Peace is the most precious thing we can have in the world.”
