Uncover the secrets of glass frogs that turn transparent at night!

When young glass frogs swarm at night, they can become translucent, hiding nearly 90% of their red blood cells.

Hidden inside the frog’s liver were colored areas that could camouflage the cells, according to a study published in the journal Science.

During daylight hours, these little frogs spend their time hanging under the leaves of trees. At this point, their green forms cast no shadows, making them invisible to would-be predators.

However, upon awakening, the frogs appear reddish brown.

“When it’s transparent, it’s for its safety,” said Janji Yao, a biomedical engineer at Duke University and co-author of the study. When they are awake, they can actively evade predators, but when they are asleep and more vulnerable, they can adapt and go unnoticed.”

The scientists used imaging and ultrasound technology to uncover a new discovery: frogs are able to “concentrate” or mask nearly 90% of red blood cells in the liver during sleep.

Yao also noted that frogs can contract and contract most of their internal organs.

The study does an excellent job of explaining how glass frogs camouflage blood in the liver to maintain transparency, said Juan Manuel Guayasamin, a frog biologist at the University of San Francisco in Quito, Ecuador, who was not involved in the study. How she managed to accomplish this feat remains a mystery.

For most animals, too little oxygen circulating in the blood for several hours would be fatal, and too concentrated blood could lead to fatal thrombosis. However, frogs are able to survive.

The researchers believe that future studies of this type may inform the development of anticoagulant drugs.
