Uncovering Unexpected Advantages of the Mediterranean Diet
A research team from Newcastle University in the UK found that the Mediterranean diet reduced the risk of dementia by 23 percent.
BMC Medicine notes that the Mediterranean diet is a diet rich in seafood, fruits, vegetables, grains, and fats. The results of previous studies have proven the benefits of this diet for human health.
The researchers analyzed data from 60,298 people who followed their condition for 10 years to see if their diet was in line with the Mediterranean diet. The researchers also looked at genetic indicators of risk for developing neurodegenerative diseases. During the study period, 882 cases of dementia were registered.
The researchers found no significant association between genetic factors in dementia and adherence to the Mediterranean diet. This suggests that proper nutrition reduces the risk of dementia, even in people at genetic risk. The overall risk of developing dementia was reduced by 23 percent.
