Experts warn about the hidden dangers of “healthy” foods

Many people believe that certain foods like brown bread, low-fat yogurt, and protein bars are healthy choices. However, experts are now cautioning that these so-called healthy foods can actually increase the risk of several deadly diseases.

Study reveals surprising results

An Australian study selected brown bread, low-fat yogurt, and protein bars for investigation. Despite being commonly perceived as healthy options, these foods were found to potentially raise the risk of conditions such as heart attacks and high blood pressure. The study followed the diets of 10,006 women aged 46 to 55 for 15 years, revealing that those who consumed more processed superfoods had a 39% higher risk factor.

Ultra-processed foods, like the ones mentioned above, tend to be low in fiber and high in salt and sugar. These factors are known to contribute to the development of cardiovascular disease. Anushriya Pant, from the University of Sydney, highlighted these concerns at the European Society of Cardiology conference in Amsterdam.

False advertising and hidden dangers

Many foods are misleadingly marketed as “healthy” due to their low-calorie content. However, they often contain high levels of salt, which can lead to high blood pressure. British women may be particularly at risk as their diets typically consist of 57% of these ultra-processed foods, which is significantly higher than the highest amount observed in the study.

Past research has already linked ultra-processed foods to obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cancer. It is crucial for individuals to be aware of the potential dangers hidden behind seemingly healthy food choices.
