Moscow, March 25 – The President of the World Boxing Association (WBA), Gilberto Mendoza, confirmed the termination of negotiations regarding the duel between the Ukrainian teams Oleksandr Usyk and the British Tyson Fury.
The WBA previously stated that on March 11, it had received confirmation from both sides of an agreement to hold the heavyweight bout on April 29 at Wembley Stadium, London. On March 22, ESPN reported that the parties had broken off talks regarding the fight.
Fury defeated compatriot Derek Chisora on December 4 to retain the World Boxing Council (WBC) heavyweight title. After the win, he challenged WBA, International Boxing Federation (IBF), World Boxing Organization (WBO) and International Boxing Organization (IBO) heavyweight champion Usyk. Earlier, the WBA stated that the Ukrainian would be forced to start negotiations for a fight with British representative Dubois if a fight with Fury was not agreed upon.
