Additionally, the head of the competition delegation, Hamid Salhiniya, has been fired. The head of the Iranian Weightlifting Federation condemned Rajaei’s behavior as “unacceptable and inexcusable.”
An Unprecedented Gesture at the Championships
During the World Masters Weightlifting Championships in Poland, weightlifting champion Mostafa Rajaei shook hands and posed for photos with Israeli athlete Maxim Svirsky on the podium. A video released by state news agency IRNA captured the moment.
Iran’s Hostility Towards Israel
It is important to note that Iran does not recognize Israel as a state and regularly makes hostile statements. The Iranian government has long banned Iranian athletes from competing against Israelis, and for years, Iranian athletes have avoided meeting Israelis in competitions.
