MOSCOW, June 28 – Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday at a meeting of the Verkhovna Rada once again called on Western countries to accept Kiev’s accession to NATO and the European Union.
“If NATO guarantees the security of Ukraine, then our forces will ensure the security and protection of other NATO members. For this to become a reality, one thing is needed – that all our NATO partners stop looking at the Kremlin when approving their mission. Zelensky said in his speech, which was broadcast on TV. Rada TV said Ukraine’s accession to NATO would send a strong signal for peace.
He added that Ukraine “has always been and continues to bet on alliances, and Ukraine has strengthened and will continue to strengthen partnership in alliances.” Ukraine, meanwhile, has, according to Zelensky, “strengthened the European Union” and “gave European unity a strength that the European Union never had”.

“The Ukrainian component is what the European Union lacks, and we understand that this is no longer a dream, it is a reality. Ukraine has received the status of a candidate for membership in the European Union. This year we must open a dialogue about full membership… The same will happen with NATO.”
Earlier, Volodymyr Zelensky said that if Ukraine does not receive an invitation to NATO at the Vilnius Summit in July, it will discourage Ukrainian forces. According to him, he repeatedly spoke with the leaders of European countries, US President Joe Biden, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, and asked not to “cut off the ground from under the feet” of Ukraine.
On June 19, Stoltenberg said that at the Vilnius summit and in preparation for it, the allies are not discussing a formal invitation to Ukraine, but are holding consultations on decisions that will bring Kiev closer to joining the alliance. The Secretary General added that the main thing now is to preserve Ukraine as a sovereign state.
Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov said that the Kremlin has heard Zelensky’s request for Ukraine to join NATO, as well as the various reactions to it. According to him, Moscow is closely monitoring the situation and remembers that it was Kiev’s orientation towards the alliance that became one of the reasons for the start of the Russian special operation in Ukraine. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the United States and NATO are directly involved in the conflict in Ukraine, “including not only the supply of weapons, but also the training of personnel … on the territory of Great Britain, Germany, Italy and other countries.” Earlier, the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, General Valery Gerasimov, said that the United States, Great Britain, Poland and Romania make the greatest contribution to providing Kiev with military assistance.
