According to Square Enix, Sales of “Forspoken” Have Not Been Very Impressive
Forspoken has yet to sell as many copies as Square Enix had intended.
The company’s Luminous Productions studio’s first game, Forspoken, has received “lacklustre” sales. Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda remarked on a recent financials call. Matsuda added that the game’s mixed critical and consumer reception is consistent with its sales performance.
The company claims Forspoken, released on January 24, 2023, has received mixed reviews. Yet, the game has also gotten praise for its action elements, such as parkour and combat capabilities. Thus it has produced outcomes that will enhance our future game production capabilities.
“That said, its sales have been underwhelming, and while the success of new titles with February and March release dates will be the final arbiter, we see considerable downside risk to our FY2023/3 earnings,” the report continued.
What happens in the near future?
The company announced that Luminous Productions would be incorporated with Square Enix less than two months after the game’s release. According to the business, the combination will “further boost the competitive capabilities of the Group’s development studios.”
“[Square Enix] has developed multiple AAA high-definition (HD) games and holds a lot of intellectual property (IP) and content,” the merger announcement says. “Luminous Productions Co., Ltd. has technical know-how in game engine development and the ability to build AAA titles. Combining the two organizations will considerably strengthen the Group’s capacity to create HD games.”
The complete financial report is available for reading, thanks to Square Enix. Additionally, Matsuda said the business intends to release blockchain games throughout the upcoming fiscal year.
How did you feel about Forspoken? Final Fantasy XVI, Square Enix’s upcoming blockbuster game, is slated to release in June.
