The European Football Association (UEFA) has confirmed that a minute of silence will be observed in all matches of the European Club Championship this week in memory of the victims of the earthquake in Turkey and Syria.

A devastating earthquake struck southern Turkey and northern Syria on Monday, killing about 40,000 people, according to the UN aid agency.

The European Football Association has revealed details of honoring and supporting earthquake victims ahead of this week’s knockout matches in the Champions League, Europa League and European Conference League.

It was decided that a minute of silence would be observed before every UEFA club competition match this week, and a commemorative banner reading “We are with you” in Turkish and Arabic will be displayed.

A UEFA statement released on Monday confirmed that black armbands can be worn at the discretion of teams and referees.

Trabzonspor is the only Turkish club to take part in UEFA competitions this week as it hosts Basel in the first leg of matchday sixteen of the European Conference League.

Clubs Istanbul Basaksehir and Sivasspor qualified for the round of 16 in this competition by taking the lead in their two groups, while Fenerbahce qualified for the same round in the Europa League.
