Naval News has announced that South Korea is working on a project to develop a new generation of sea minesweepers for its army.

South Korea’s Defense Procurement Program Administration (DAPA) has announced the start of development of the new MSH-II naval minesweepers.

The new ships will replace the aging Gangyeong-class sea-going minesweepers that were in service with the South Korean army between 1986 and 1994 and will operate with the new Yangyang ships of the South Korean Navy.

Unlike previous generations of sea minesweepers, the MSH-II ships will be equipped with robots and small uninhabited submarines capable of detecting and destroying sea mines so that the ship’s crew is away from the danger of these mines being detonated.

These ships will have fiberglass hulls, similar to modern Russian minesweepers, and each ship will displace approximately 700 tons. It will also be equipped with 20 mm M61 machine guns and 7.62 mm M60 machine guns.
